Rhinoplasty (Nose Enhancements)

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the surgical or non-surgical modification of the nose to improve the functions (breathing & smelling) and/or the overall aesthetic (what is normally perceived as beautiful) appearance.

The functional aspect is usually to ease the passage of air.

The aesthetic aspects consists of the following components that can be surgically or non-surgically modified:

1. Dorsal (Dorsum)
2. Side Wall
3. Tip
4. Alar-nostril Sill
5. Columella

Furthermore, the caucasian, the asian & the melanesian (negroid) nose are distinctively different. However, in PNG, because of interracial marriages, there are unique noses that may not fall into one of the above 3 classes or races. Because of the strong western & asian influences in PNG, the concept of an aesthetic nose may be variable among the various social subclasses or subgroups. Despite that some concepts of aesthetically unpleasing nose may be obvious and thus, be universal:
1. Deviated or croaked nose (more pathological or arises as a result of disease or trauma)
2. Nasal Dorsal Hump
3. Excessively Prominent Ethnic Nose (Roman Nose, etc.)
4. Broad & Low Nasal Tip
5. Excessively Long Nose with Extended Tip etc.

Excessive modification of the nose may obscure the ethnic origin of a person. In line with this;  interracial marriages in PNG has made the definition of ethnic nose vague or in other words the ethnicity of the nose may be lost.

Below is a case of a mixed race, person. He has a nose, which is oriented more towards a caucasian race. This person underwent rhinoplasty at the hands of Dr. Mol to reduce the nasal tip, broadness and to raise it slightly, higher than the level of the dorsum. This procedure, also has the positive effects of straightening out the columella as well as the nostrils; thus, giving it a more aesthetically pleasing, appearance.

Non-surgical modification of the nose is done by injecting 'fillers' (substances that are injected under the skin to cause the skin to elevate or bulge out) to modify the shape of the nose.

Nasal Reconstructive Surgery is done after trauma or ablative surgery for lesions (cancer etc.) of the nose. Sometimes it is done for severe congenital nasal deformities (e.g. cleft lip affecting the nose, etc.)
