Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery services at Goroka General Hospital commenced in April 2008. In August 2009 (after 16 months) the operation theatre was closed for all electives due to the break down of scavenging & air-conditioning systems. The following are statistics for all the procedures done within that period. Within a 16 months period, 488 cases were operated on. More than 60% of these cases were done as day cases. Most of them were cystic lesions which received sclerotherapy followed by keloids & scar revisions. The major reconstructive surgeries followed head & neck cancer ablative surgeries with the Ear-Nose-Throat & Head & Neck surgeon and Facio-Maxillary surgeon as 'team surgery'.
